Kwon Ji-an, also known as Solbi, is a former member of the K-pop group Typhoon, a Korean television personality, and a painter. She recently had artwork on display (with 4 other artists connected with the rise of K-pop) as part of an exhibition of Korean art at Park West Gallery in New York City. “Their commitment to art and their brilliance deeply moved me to tell their stories,” said Dr. Stephanie Seungmin Kim, who curated the show.
When one first stands in front of a Kwon Ji-an/Solbi painting, one is struck surely, as I was in the gallery, with how very visceral her paintings are, and how they are imbued with obvious physicality. Very few painters are capable of evoking those thoughts from the viewer, very few even try, aiming as they invariably do for other things. It is my understanding that her paintings have this look and feel because when she paints, she gets her entire body into it, moving and swaying a bit like the girl she once was at play, and a bit like the stage performer she later became.
